Consumers’ choices impact global value chains and cause environmental harm in areas far from where they live. This session (i) describes how to track global environmental impacts caused by European consumption and help European policy making, (ii) helps us understand how consumer behaviour can influence circular global value chains and (iii) illustrates examples where circular material sourcing can improve the environmental performance of a company.

Before joining the EEA, he worked at the Swedish Environmental Research Institute (IVL). He has a PhD in global environmental politics from Lund University.

Ioannis Bakas holds a PhD on life cycle assessment and waste. His professional background includes extensive expertise in circular economy policies, including product and waste legislation. He has recently published work around consumption-based environmental impacts and consumer behaviour in a circular economy, among others. Ioannis is currently involved in the monitoring of various EU policy initiatives such as the circular economy, zero pollution and the 8th environmental action programme.

Luca Coscieme’s research focuses on the impacts of consumption behaviour on climate change and other environmental and social areas, with a focus on structural changes for enabling sustainable lifestyles. He was an IPBES fellow as well as a Marie-Curie fellow at Trinity College Dublin and the European Environment Agency. He is the lead author of the report “Unfit, Unfair, Unfashionable: Resizing Fashion for a Fair Consumption Space” and has co-authored the reports “1.5-Degree Lifestyles: Towards a Fair Consumption Space for All” and ”Textiles and the environment in a circular economy”.

Kati Ihamäki is responsible for defining sustainability ambition, ESG strategy and target setting for the Fiskars Group. In addition to her day job, Kati serves on the boards of St1 Nordic, HJK ry, the Children and Youth Foundation, the responsibility board of Finland Chamber of Commerce and the board of the Association for Finnish Work. Prior to joining Fiskars, she worked at OP Financial Group as VP for brand and CR and had a long career at Finnair, where she served as director of sustainable and actively participated in the responsibility work and advocacy of international aviation and tourism organisations. Kati believes in the power of cooperation – with the help of states, companies, the third sector and citizens, we can achieve sustainable change and a better world for both people and nature.
